The Problem
Island Health manages more than 1,000 Vocera medical pagers, and the small plastic clips on each battery pack were prone to breaking. A single failed clip meant replacing the entire battery unit, a fix that cost taxpayers over $10,000 each year and generated unnecessary electronic waste. The organization needed a durable, cost-effective repair that would keep otherwise functional batteries in service and reduce environmental impact.
Our Solution
Morin 3D partnered with Island Health in a collaborative design process, analyzing the original clip's weak points and engineering a significantly stronger alternative. A pilot run of prototypes was produced and field-tested, confirming excellent durability and fit. With validation complete, Morin 3D moved to full-scale production, manufacturing replacement clips for deployment across a long-term-care site.
The Results
The custom clips are now in use, rescuing hundreds of batteries from the landfill and transforming a recurring five-figure expense into a minor, sustainable repair. Island Health has reduced costs, minimized e-waste, and extended the lifespan of its critical communication devices.
